Do you have family history research in the UK? Have you looked at the Discovery portal via The National Archives?  The public archives of the UK government contains over 1000 years of history with over 5% of its collection digitised. Download images of wills and probates, Army, Navy and Air Force records, Cabinet Records, pictures, photographs and more.

British Army war diaries 1914-1922 written by officers in the front line have now been digitised. These diaries give unprecedented access to daily movements and action in the trenches and beyond.

We are encouraging researchers to come on board and search the website and download your records of interest on Wednesday October 22 2014  to spike our stats.  You can do this at home  via the library website with your library card or at any computer in your local library.

In early September a major upgrade took place.  It now enables archive users to search, browse and tag 32 million record descriptions of records held by The National Archives, alongside the collections of over 2,500 archives across the UK.  This opens up access to a wide range of collections and information for your family history research.  If you are a first time user read the comprehensive research guides to get started - and let us know about your discoveries. 

British Newspapers Archive

The British Newspapers Archive has grown to over 8 million searchable pages.  300,000 new pages have recently been added, including six brand new titles.  These include the national newspaper the Daily Mirror, the Lancashire Evening Post and the The Oxford Times.

Newspapers are an excellent research tool to learn more about your family history.

Access BNA in the library on any computer via the genealogy e-resources link. Create an account and save your favourite articles.

There has been some recent changes to findmypast library edition. There is no longer multiple domains for each country (UK, Ireland and Australia New Zealand). Access is now provided for all subscriptions via www.findmypast.com.au.

The new website has a great new look, a more powerful search tool and many other exciting features.   Here are some of the highlights:

* Users will continue to be able to access records anonymously as a guest by simply using the Search all records option on the new-look homepage 

* Users will also have the option to register with findmypast and start their own accounts. This means they’ll be able to use the personalised services and save their own family trees.

* Users who already have a findmypast account will now be able to log in to their own accounts from library PCs.

Times Digital Archives

We now have access to Times Digital Archive, 19th Century British Library Newspapers and Burney Collection Newspapers.

The Times Digital Archive, 1785-1985, is an online historical archive, delivering every page as published from 200 years of The Times (London).

19th Century British Library Newspapers - This full-text, fully searchable digital archive includes 50 papers originating in England, Scotland and Ireland, carefully selected from the British Library and providing a broad yet detailed view of British life in the 19th century 17th and 18th Century.

Burney Collection Newspapers - The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media available from the British Library. The collection includes more than 1000 pamphlets, and newspapers from the period. The collection covers more than 200 years of accounts from newspapers from England, Ireland, Scotland and a handful of papers from British colonies in the Americas and Asia.

These databases can be access via the Genealogy databases link. You will need your library card number for home access.
