British Newspapers Archive have released a terrific little video with a step-by-step guide showing you how to search the online newspaper archive for an ancestor or particular person from history.

Access over 9.5 million newspaper pages on BNA and other genealogy e-resources on any PC at all our libraries.  Recent additions include Bell’s Life in London and Sporting Chronicle, the Lincolnshire Echo, the Waterford Chronicle and Irish newspapers.  Most of our genealogy e-resources are being constantly updated with new collections.

There are more than 8 million pages from historical newspapers that were published across Britain and Ireland available to explore on the British Newspaper Archive.  One million have been added just this year.

In recent months the following titles have been added.

Read the local, national and international news printed in Lake's Falmouth Packet and Cornwall Advertiser between 1858-1860, 1864-1866 and 1869-1870.

Browse the beautiful adverts and images and read the articles that were published in the Bedfordshire Times and Independent in 1906, 1910, 1935 and 1950

The Northern Whig was printed in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Search copies of the newspaper from 1868, 1869 and 1870.

For your Victorian Londeners read the Evening Standard, available for 1860, 1861, 1862, 1866 and 1867.

Search copies of Glasgow’s Daily Record from 1914 and 1915, with more editions from the World War One period coming soon.

Browse the beautiful old adverts and articles that were published in the Surrey Comet from 1855-1857 and 1859-1870.

Search the local, national and international news reported by the Watford Observer in 1864, 1865, 1867, 1868, 1869 and 1870. 

Read the local, national and international news reported by London’s Illustrated Times in 1868. Each edition featured a number of beautiful illustrations too.

Search the news reported by the Folkestone, Hythe, Sandgate & Cheriton Herald in 1913, 1915, 1924 and 1925, with more editions from the WW1 period also coming soon

The British Newspapers Archive has grown to over 8 million searchable pages.  300,000 new pages have recently been added, including six brand new titles.  These include the national newspaper the Daily Mirror, the Lancashire Evening Post and the The Oxford Times.

Newspapers are an excellent research tool to learn more about your family history.

British Newspapers Archive

A new Genealogy online resource has been added to our offerings. Like Ancestry and Find My Past, the British Newspapers Archive can only be used by patrons in the library.
Millions of pages of historical newspapers from the United Kingdom and Ireland are being progressively added and made available online for the first time. Search articles by keyword, name, location, date or title and watch your results appear in an instant. Search news articles for national events, as well as issues of local and regional importance. News articles are your window into daily life in historical Britain.
Search for your family's birth, marriage and death notices plus related announcements including engagements. Read letters to the editor, obituaries, advertisements and more.
Please note: Researchers are asked to register for the first time when using the BNA, and to sign in when they access the database each time. You will be able to save personal searches, bookmark articles and more.
