Sydney Research

The City of Sydney Archives maintain excellent resources on their website. They have just released the Historical Atlas of Sydney, containing digital images of several sets of
detailed maps of Sydney covering the years 1865-1972 more or less, with plans to add more.

In addition the Archives maintain an online catalogue of about 40,000 photographs. The Assessment Books record details of ownership, occupation, construction, and value for buildings in the City of Sydney between 1845 and 1948. The Sydney Reference Collection Published items are catalogued bibliographically within the City Library's "Horizon" on-line catalogue. The Planning Street Cards provide information about historical buildings and development applications from about 1908 to the 1990s.

Links historic video, audio and pictures to their locations online. Content on offer includes early images from Port Jackson in 1821, as well as more recent events such as the Hilton Hotel bombing. Downloading the mobile version to your phone is ideal for a walking tour of the inner-Sydney streets if you a planning a research trip.

Dictionary of Sydney
Commissioned essays on all things Sydney and contantly growing. Not a lot to be accessed currently but check the preview and progress link which inlcudes suburb and places of significance and suburb demographics.
